What do I need to do prior to my surgery? (Endoscopy and Colonoscopy patients – see below)
- Arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you for 24 hours after your surgery. You may not drive yourself, be left alone or take public transportation unless accompanied by your pre-designated responsible adult. Failure to meet these guidelines will result in the cancellation of your procedure.
- If there is a change in your physical condition, such as fever or cold, please notify your physician immediately.
- On the day before your surgery, have a light dinner and nothing to eat or drink after midnight. That will help reduce the chance of nausea or vomiting following anesthesia. Avoid the use of mints, chewing gum or cigarettes. Failure to follow these guidelines could result in the cancellation of your procedure.
- Unless instructed by your physician, do not take any medication after midnight. Please note: if you are on blood pressure or heat medication, or if you are a diabetic, obtain specific instruction from your physician.
- A nurse from the Surgery Center will call you the day before your procedure to obtain medical information. If you are scheduled to have surgery on a Monday, the nurse will contact you the Friday before. If your surgery falls on the day after a holiday, the nurse will call you the last business day before the holiday.
